Title: Inara
Inara wanted to be a teacher. She loved school: asking questions was encouraged, and she was never told to 'hush her prying mouth'. Being a teacher meant knowing all the answers, and Inara wanted to know everything. 'Why was the sky blue?' 'How did the big ships stay in the air?' 'Why did green apples make her sick when the red ones didn't?' Then one day her teacher told her she had a great opportunity. She could have as much school as she wanted, forever. She'd have to leave her mother, and go to school in the city, but she'd never have to work in the farm centre, or spend another day dirtying her hands oiling the big harvesting machines. Inara didn't look back when she left. |
